About the Position
The Program Associate - Protection is part of the Protection Team under InterAction’s Humanitarian Policy and Practice (HPP) Team with a focus on supporting the member facing work primarily the Protection and Gender Based Violence Working Groups. This a full-time position dependent upon funding availability. The Program Associate will work with the Program Manager – Protection and the Director for Protection providing support on protection policy, advocacy and inter-agency initiatives. This includes thematic and context specific work on protection, gender based violence and prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse.
In addition, the Program Associate will actively engage in the broader and cross-cutting work of InterAction’s HPP team, including acting as an issue lead or focal point as required in support of the HPP three-year strategic plan.
This position is based in Washington DC. Due to COVID-19, all staff are currently working remotely and following InterAction’s COVID-19 policies. InterAction aims to have staff transition back to the Washington, DC office in mid-fall. Telework options and hybrid schedules will be available.
Essential Functions:
Coordination and Support to Working Groups
· Provide support to the work of InterAction members through the Protection and Gender Based Violence Working Groups and communities of practice, fostering a collaborative work environment and jointly implementing activities;
· Support collective member engagement on US Government policy for protection and GBV;
· Support the facilitation of work-planning efforts in line with member priorities, grant requirements, and reflective of timely/pressing needs within the protection community;
· Plan and prepare meetings and consultations, maintaining appropriate correspondence with external and NGO stakeholders;
· Draft relevant material in support of the programs, including agendas, minutes, program reports, correspondence and other communications materials;
· Conduct research and drafts material on country and issue specific material related to the Working Group activities;
· Initiate and drive the development and dissemination of visual and other materials, documents, and presentations to support effective communications on protection issues;
Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA)
· In close coordination with the From Pledge to Action team, stay abreast of relevant updates in organizational efforts to prevent and respond to sexual exploitation and abuse;**
· Work closely with the Program Manager for Protection and members to finalize, roll-out and support ongoing updates to InterAction's training materials for PSEA.**
Other including Administrative Support
· In collaboration with other team members, develop relationships with key stakeholders, including donor representatives, InterAction members, and UN agencies on current/urgent protection issues;
· Attend and take notes at meetings. Draft minutes and reports of meetings as requested.
· Support the coordination of Protection Team grant reporting, including report writing and editing as needed, ensuring compliance with grant requirements and documentation of accomplishments;
· Support preparation for any future proposals;
· Actively participate to HPP work streams and activities, including through strategic planning, the shaping of new initiatives, and new teams formed in pursuit of HPP work streams;
· Represent InterAction’s HPP Team internally and externally, as requested;
· Actively participate in InterAction initiatives.
Qualifications
· Candidates should have a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and at least four years’ work experience in the humanitarian sector, including two years’ work in situations of humanitarian crises or domestically on USG policy/advocacy; or several years of college plus equivalent work experience;
· Strong preference given to candidates with a background or knowledge of current policy challenges and priorities for protection and/or GBV;
· Interpersonal and relationship-building skills with InterAction and Member staff and other external stakeholders. Enjoy working as part of a team, and facilitating cross-team collaboration
· Strong organizing, coordination, and project management skills. Ability to prioritize, multi-task, adapt, and manage time effectively
· Ability to proactively and independently follow through on tasks and responsibilities in a detail-oriented manner and with limited supervision
· Ability to write clearly and succinctly about complex ideas is essential;
· Some experience with communications and/or graphic design is also encouraged;
· The successful candidate will work well in a team environment, complementing the work of others and actively engaging in the planning, design and monitoring of the project to ensure maximum efficiency;
· Proficiency in Spanish, French, or Arabic highly desirable.
